Trickster deities are often reduced to being villains and nothing more. ![]() I enjoy that he is given his owed complexity in The Red Pyramid. I look forward to seeing how Set is turned from a villain to a hero in future books. All of the characters are now set up to where they need to be for the upcoming challenges against Apophis. However, it was extremely satisfying to see Set put in his place at the end. That Apophis and not Set who is the big bad of the series was obvious to me fairly quickly. We can tell that he is an author who truly enjoys having fun with his craft. ![]() His multiple writing styles across his various series intrigue and delight me. The frame allows Riordan to play with the storytelling in interesting and compelling ways that I appreciate. I love how they keep taking the mike back and forth from each other. The framing device of the story is brilliant. Particularly when the writing is so good that you’d happily read the whole thing even if there weren’t some gearlike mechanical whoozitz element to the tale. ![]() ![]() a good novel that involves clockwork and gears is right up my alley. I’m tired of Steampunk, you see, but even then I have a confession to make. I’m tired of Steampunk, and yet if I say that word to most kids that walk into my library they’ll give me a blank stare followed by an immediate, “What’s Steampunk?” I’d explain to them that it’s this strange amalgamation of historical fiction plus futuristic gear-based clockwork technology but I know that this would not cause the blank stares to cease. ![]() ![]() ![]() There are also creative, unstable daemons and long-lived vampires who become interested in the witch's discovery. ![]() For witches are not the only otherworldly creatures living alongside humans.
